Anteromedial surface of fibula

Facies anteromedialis fibulae

Definition

The medial surface, situated between the anterior and medial (or interosseous) borders of the fibula, is also referred to as the anterior or anteromedial surface of fibula. In the upper portion of the fibula, the medial (or interosseous) border closely aligns with the anterior border, making them almost indistinguishable. As a result, the anteromedial (or medial or anterior) surface becomes extremely narrow, measuring as little as 1 mm or even less.

The anteromedial surface of fibula serves as the attachment site for the muscles of the extensor (or anterior) leg compartment, including the slightly anteriorly positioned extensor digitorum longus and slightly posteriorly positioned extensor hallucis longus. The peroneus tertius muscle originates from the lower one-fourth of the anteromedial surface of the fibula.
