Superior articular surface of lateral condyle
Facies articularis superior condyli lateralis
- Related terms: Articular surface of lateral tibial condyle
Definition
The superior articular surface of lateral condyle of the tibia is nearly circular. Its central part is concave and directly articulates with the lateral condyle of the femur. A C-shaped cartilaginous rim known as the lateral meniscus covers the peripheral margin, separating the articular surface from the lateral condyle of the femur. The lateral meniscus functions as a shock absorber and provides stability to the knee joint. On the medial side, the superior articular surface of lateral condyle is elevated, forming a prominent bony tubercle that borders the lateral extent of the intercondylar eminence.
