Intercondylar area
Area intercondylaris
Definition
The intercondylar area is the rough region located on the superior surface of the upper end of the tibia. It is positioned between the smooth articular surfaces of the medial and lateral condyles of the tibia.
The central part of the intercondylar area is elevated, forming an intercondylar eminence that divides this region into an anterior intercondylar area in front of the eminence and a posterior intercondylar area behind the eminence.
From front to back, the anterior intercondylar area serves as the attachment site for various structures, including: 1) anterior horn of the medial meniscus, 2) anterior cruciate ligament, and 3) anterior horn of the lateral meniscus. Similarly, the posterior intercondylar area (from front to back) functions as the attachment site for: 1) the posterior horn of the lateral meniscus, 2) the posterior horn of the medial meniscus, and 3) the posterior cruciate ligament.
