Base of metatarsal bone

Basis ossis metatarsi

  • Latin synonym: Basis ossis metatarsei
  • Related terms: Base of metatarsal

Definition

The base of metatarsal bone is located proximally. It has a wedge shape and oblique direction from medial to lateral, articulating with the distal tarsal bone(s).

The bases of the 2nd to 5th metatarsal bones also articulate with each other. Ligaments attach to their rough dorsal and plantar surfaces.

The 1st metatarsal bone’s base provides attachment to the tibialis anterior muscle’s tendon on its medial side. Lateral compartment leg muscles include peroneus longus and brevis. Peroneus longus runs medially to insert into 1st metatarsal bone’s base on its lateral side, while peroneus brevis inserts into a tuberosity on the lateral aspect of the base of the 5th metatarsal bone. Additionally, peroneus tertius from the anterior leg compartment inserts into the base of the 5th metatarsal bone and its shaft. The flexor digiti minimi brevis, among the foot’s intrinsic muscles, arises from the plantar surface of the 5th metatarsal bone’s base.
