Caroticoclinoid foramen

Foramen caroticoclinoideum

Definition

The carotico-clinoid foramen is the result of ossification either of the carotico-clinoid ligament or of a dural fold extending between the anterior and middle clinoid processes of the sphenoid bone.

The boundaries of the foramen are: anterior clinoid process laterally, the body of the sphenoid medially, a bony bridge between clinoid processes posteriorly, and base of the lesser wing (posterior root) of the sphenoid bone anteriorly (and occasionally also as a part of the canal roof).

In Keyes's series, bilateral complete foramen incidence was 5.35%, the contact type was noted in 0.32%, and the incomplete type was found in 10.37% of 2187 inspected skulls.

The mean diameter of the caroticoclinoid foramina is 5.52 mm
