Crypts of lingual tonsil

Cryptae tonsillae lingualis

  • Latin synonym: Cryptae tonsillares
  • Synonym: Tonsillar crypts

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The crypts of the lingual tonsils are invaginations of the overlying nonkeratinized epithelium that form central crypts within the lingual tonsil. These crypts are lined by stratified squamous non-keratinized epithelium and are infiltrated with lymphoid cells, forming reticular epithelium.

The crypts serve as a site for antigen exposure and immune response initiation. Ducts from adjacent mucous glands empty into these crypts, providing a flushing mechanism to cleanse them.

This structure is crucial for the immunological function of the lingual tonsils, which are part of Waldeyer's ring and play a role in the body's defense against ingested or inhaled antigens
