Cuneiform bones
Ossa cuneiformea
Definition
The cuneiform bones are a group of three wedgeshaped tarsal bones located in the midfoot, situated between the navicular bone proximally and the bases of the first three metatarsals distally. Their name derives from the Latin "cuneus," meaning wedge, reflecting their characteristic shape.
The three cuneiforms are named by their position:
Medial cuneiform (first cuneiform) the largest of the three, with a reniform (kidneyshaped) distal articular surface. It articulates with the navicular proximally and the first metatarsal distally.
Intermediate cuneiform (second cuneiform) the smallest, with a triangular distal articular surface. It articulates with the navicular proximally and the second metatarsal distally.
Lateral cuneiform (third cuneiform) also with a triangular distal surface. It articulates with the navicular proximally, the third metatarsal distally, and the cuboid laterally.
