Cuticle

Cuticula

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The cuticle is a thin layer of dead tissue that rides on the nail plate as it grows. It serves as a protective seal between the proximal nail fold and the nail plate, preventing water, bacteria, and other pathogens from entering the space beneath the proximal nail fold and reaching the nail matrix. The cuticle is composed of keratinized epithelial cells and is continuous with the underside of the proximal nail fold.
