- Related terms: Dorsal branch
Definition
Upon reaching the vertebral body, the lumbar artery divides into several branches, including the dorsal branch of lumbar artery. The dorsal branch of the lumbar artery primarily supplies the muscles and skin of the back. It travels posteriorly along the vertebral body and gives off several smaller branches. These branches include the spinal branch, which enters the intervertebral foramen to supply the spinal cord and vertebral bodies, and muscular branches that supply the paraspinal muscles.
