Frontopontine fibers
Fibrae frontopontinae
- Related terms: Frontopontine tract; Frontopontine fibres
Definition
Frontopontine fibres are descending corticopontine projection fibres that carry information from the frontal lobe to the ipsilateral pontine nuclei. They form the frontopontine tract and descend towards the brainstem, where they are generally positioned anterior to the corticospinal tract.
The frontopontine fibres have a preferential ventromedial location relative to the other corticopontine fibres. After terminating in the pontine nuclei, the pathway continues through transverse pontine fibres, which cross the midline and enter the contralateral cerebellum through the middle cerebellar peduncle.
