Gingival papilla
Papilla gingivalis
- Latin synonym: Papilla interdentalis
- Synonym: Interdental papilla
- Related terms: Gingival papilla; Interdental papilla
Definition
The gingival papilla *a.k.a. the interdental papilla) is the portion of gingival tissue that occupies the interdental space between adjacent teeth.
In healthy gingiva, the papilla appears firm, pink, and pointed in the anterior teeth, whereas in posterior teeth it is broader and flatter. Histologically, the gingival papilla is covered by stratified squamous epithelium and supported by dense connective tissue.
Functions
The interdental papilla plays an important role in protecting the underlying periodontal structures by preventing food impaction and limiting bacterial accumulation within the interdental space.
