Interosseous tibiofibular ligament

Ligamentum tibiofibulare interosseum

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The interosseous tibiofibular ligament is a dense, fibrous structure located within the distal tibiofibular syndesmosis, connecting the distal tibia and fibula just above the ankle joint. It is considered the deepest and strongest component of the syndesmotic ligament complex, contributing significantly to the stability of the ankle mortise by resisting lateral and rotational displacement of the fibula relative to the tibia.

It is not officially recognized by Terminologia Anaotmica 2 and may considered simply as the lower part of the interosseous membrane.
