Lateral articular facet of patella

Facies articularis lateralis patellae

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The lateral articular facet of the patella is the larger of the two main articular surfaces on the posterior aspect of the patella. It is covered by hyaline cartilage, which is typically thicker than that of the medial facet, reflecting its role in bearing greater contact forces during knee flexion. The lateral facet is concave in shape and articulates with the lateral trochlear surface of the femur. It is separated from the medial facet by a vertical ridge, and in most individuals, the lateral facet extends more proximally and laterally, sometimes forming a single prominent lateral transverse ridge. The cartilage surface of the lateral facet is characterized by a concave depression, and the facet itself is often more prominent and steeper than the medial facet, contributing to patellofemoral stability, especially in early flexion.
