Median ridge of patella

Crista mediana patellae

  • Latin synonym: Crista verticalis patellae
  • Synonym: Vertical crest of patella

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The median ridge of the patella is a prominent vertical bony structure on the posterior (articular) surface of the patella that separates the medial and lateral facets. Anatomically, this ridge serves as the primary articulation point with the femoral trochlear groove during knee flexion and extension. The median ridge is typically positioned closer to the medial border of the patella, resulting in a larger lateral facet and a smaller medial facet.
