Definition

The sesamoid bones of the foot are two ovoid ossicles on the plantar aspect of the metatarsophalangeal joint, separated by the intersesamoidal ridge and embedded in the medial and lateral bands the tendon of the flexor hallucis brevis.

The medial (tibial) sesamoid is generally larger than the lateral (fibular) sesamoid and it also with a more superficial and distal position.
