Definition

Antoine Micheau

The left lateral region of the abdomen refers anatomically to the area on the left side of the abdominal wall, bounded superiorly by the lower ribs and costal cartilages, inferiorly by the iliac crest and inguinal ligament, anteriorly by the rectus abdominis muscle, and posteriorly by the iliocostalis lumborum and quadratus lumborum muscles.

This region encompasses the lateral abdominal wall, which is composed of the transversus abdominis, internal oblique, and external oblique muscles and is in front o the descending and sigmoid colon, portions of the urinary tract, spleen, pancreas tail, and splenic flexure of the colon.
