Mandibular symphysis
Symphysis mandibulae
- Latin synonym: Symphysis menti
- Synonym: Mental symphysis
Definition
The mandibular symphysis, also referred to as the symphysis menti, is essentially the fusion point of the line where the right and left halves of the mandible come together. During the development phase of the human embryo, the mandible initially develops as two distinct halves, on the right and left sides. These halves fuse at the front to form a single, unified bone. This fusion point is known as the mandibular symphysis, which is marked by a faint ridge, just below the lower incisor teeth.
