Definition

Antoine Micheau

The medial basal segmental artery of the right lung (A7; Cardiac branch) is a branch of the right inferior pulmonary artery that supplies the medial basal segment (S7) of the right lower lobe.

Anatomical Details

The right pulmonary artery divides into superior and inferior trunks. The inferior trunk (basal trunk) descends within the oblique fissure and gives rise to the basal segmental arteries. The medial basal segmental artery (A7) arises from this basal trunk often as the first or one of the earliest branches and courses anteromedially to supply the medial basal bronchopulmonary segment of the right lower lobe.

Anatomical variants: The medial basal segmental artery frequently shares a common origin with the anterior basal segmental artery (A8), forming a combined anteromedial basal trunk. Variant branching patterns are common and are clinically significant during lobectomy, segmentectomy, and interventional procedures.
