Margo medialis orbitae

  • Latin synonym: Margo orbitalis medialis
  • Synonym: Medial orbital margin
  • Related terms: Medial margin; Medial margin (Orbital cavity); Medial margin (Orbit); Medial margin (Orbital margin)

Definition

The medial margin of orbit is the inner bony edge of the square-shaped front-facing opening of the orbital cavity or eye socket. This edge is formed mainly by the frontal process of maxilla.

At its center, the medial margin of orbit serves as an attachment point for the medial palpebral ligament. This ligament holds the medial fibers of the palpebral portion of the orbicularis oculi muscle. The medial margin (or the frontal process of maxilla) also known as the anterior lacrimal crest, forms the front raised edge of the lacrimal groove, which contains the lacrimal sac.
