Definition

Antoine Micheau

The membranous layer of subcutaneous tissue is a well-defined connective tissue layer that lies deep to the fatty layer of subcutaneous tissue and superficial to the deep investing fascia of muscles.

It is most prominent in the lower anterior abdominal wall (known as Scarpa's fascia) where it attaches laterally to the fascia lata of the thigh just below the inguinal ligament, and medially to the pubic symphysis and pubic crest. In the perineum, it continues as Colles' fascia, and in the penis/scrotum as the dartos fascia.
