Meningeal branch of maxillary nerve
Ramus meningeus nervi maxillaris
- Related terms: Meningeal branch
Definition
A meningeal branch of maxillary nerve comes off from the V2 (maxillary division of trigeminal nerve), as soon as the latter emerges from the trigeminal ganglion. The meningeal branch accompanies the course of middle meningeal vessels and provides sensory innervation to the dura mater of the middle cranial fossa.
Some meningeal branches of maxillary nerve may also encroach over the lesser wing of sphenoid bone to reach onto the orbital parts of frontal bone, thus contributing to the innervation of dura mater in the anterior cranial fossa, as well.
