Definition

Muhammad A. Javaid

The meridional fibres of ciliary muscle are the outermost fibres of this muscle. They run anteroposteriorly and are attached to the scleral spur anteriorly. The scleral spur is closely related to the scleral sulcus in front and medial to it and houses the trabecular meshwork. Therefore

Function

Therefore contraction of the meridional fibres pull the scleral spur posteriorly, which opens up the trabecular meshwork and canal of Schlemm, hence facilitating aqueous humour outflow. Thus, they are more important for fluid drainage than direct accommodation.
