Papilla of parotid duct

Papilla ductus parotidei

Definition

Antoine Micheau & Muhammad A. Javaid

The papilla of parotid duct is a small mucosal elevation which is located on the inner surface of the cheek, opposite to the upper second molar tooth. It marks the opening of the parotid (Stenson's) duct into the vestibule of the mouth.

The parotid duct carries serous saliva from the parotid gland into the oral cavity. The duct crosses the masseter muscle, pierces the buccinator muscle, and opens through the papilla into the oral vestibule.
