Definition

Antoine Micheau

Behind the fascia renalis is a considerable quantity of fat, which constitutes the pararenal fat body (paranephric body; paranephric fat). The kidney is held in position partly through the attachment of the renal fascia and partly by the apposition of the neighboring viscera.

The pararenal fat body is localized posteriorly andoutside the posterior layer of the renal fascia, by opposition to the perirenal fat capsule that is localized inside the renal fascia.
