Paravesical space
Spatium paravesicale
Definition
The paravesical space is an extraperitoneal space of the pelvis located between the urinary bladder and the fascia of the pelvic sidewall muscles.
The prevesical space (space of Retzius) represents the anterior component of the paravesical space, situated between the transversalis fascia and the umbilical prevesical fascia.
The paravesical space communicates freely with other pelvic extraperitoneal compartments including the prevesical, perivesical, and perirectal spaces and with the abdominal retroperitoneal spaces (posterior pararenal, anterior pararenal, and perirenal spaces). This interconnection is clinically significant because it allows disease processes (infection, hemorrhage, or tumor) to spread between pelvic and abdominal compartments along fascial planes.
