Preperitoneal space

Spatium preperitoneale

  • Synonym: Properitoneal fat

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The preperitoneal space is the space between the peritoneum and transversalis fascia.

It is a fat-containing space that is sometimes termed “properitoneal fat”.

The preperitoneal space is not officially listed in the Terminologia Anatomica, and may be considered as the anterior part of the extraperitoneal space, overlapping with the retropubic space, the retroinguinal space and the perirenal fat body.
