Definition

Antoine Micheau

The patent part of the umbilical artery refers to the segment of the umbilical artery that remains open and functional after birth.

The umbilical arteries close shortly after birth due to smooth muscle contraction and subsequent fibrosis. However, the proximal portion of the umbilical artery, which becomes the superior vesical artery, remains patent and continues to supply blood to the bladder. It gives also the artery of ductus deferens
