Plantar tarsal ligaments
Ligamenta tarsi plantaria
Definition
The plantar tarsal ligaments are a group of ligaments located on the plantar (inferior) aspect of the tarsal bones, contributing to the stability and architecture of the foot. The principal plantar tarsal ligaments include:
Long plantar ligament: Extends from the plantar surface of the calcaneus to the bases of the second to fifth metatarsals, passing over the cuboid. It is a key stabilizer of the lateral longitudinal arch and forms a tunnel for the peroneus longus tendon.
Plantar calcaneocuboid ligament; Short plantar ligament: Runs from the anterior tubercle of the calcaneus to the plantar surface of the cuboid, lying deep to the long plantar ligament and supporting the calcaneocuboid joint
Plantar cuneocuboid ligament: These ligaments connect the plantar surfaces of the cuneiforms and the cuboid, further stabilizing the midfoot.
