Intercuneiform joints

Articulationes intercuneiformes

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The intercuneiform joints are synovial articulations between the medial, intermediate, and lateral cuneiform bones in the midfoot. These joints (first intercuneiform joint and second intercuneiform joint) are located between the adjacent cuneiforms and are stabilized by dorsal, plantar, and interosseous ligaments. The articular surfaces are generally flat to slightly curved, allowing limited gliding motion, which contributes to the stability and flexibility of the transverse arch of the foot.
