Definition

The posterior junctional area lies posterior to the trachea and esophagus, is formed by the apposition of the lungs posterior to the esophagus, and lies anterior to the vertebral bodies of T3 to T5 vertebrae.

When this space is thin, the interface of the prevascular space with right and left lung forms the posterior junction line on AP chest x-Ray.
