Right posterior lateral segment of liver
Segmentum posterius laterale dextrum hepatis
- Latin synonym: Segmentum VII hepatis
- Synonym: Segment VII of liver; Posterior superior segment of the right lobe.
- Related terms: Posterior lateral segment; Segment VII; Segment VII; Posterior lateral segment
Definition
The posterior lateral segment (segment VII) is the superior subsegment of the posterior segment of the right lateral division, situated to the right of the right hepatic vein, above the portal plane.
Note: The Terminologia Anatomica 1&2 is remarkably not at all clear for the denomination of segments of right liver, and these terminologies are not justified in official terminologies without any source cited for these terms. The use of the adjectives "anterior" for segment V and VI and "posterior" for segments VIII and VII is very strange and doesn't match with the anatomical orientation of these segments.
Thats why we prefer the use of these terminologies:
Segment V: Anterior inferior segment of the right lobe.
Segment VI: Posterior inferior segment of the right lobe.
Segment VII: Posterior superior segment of the right lobe.
Segment VIII: Anterior superior segment of the right lobe.
