Posterior surface of eyelid

Facies posterior palpebrae

Definition

The posterior surface or eyelid is composed by the palpebral conjonctiva : it is a transparent muscous membrane with a stratified columnar epithelium containing many mucus-secreting goblet cells for lubrification of the corneal epithelium.

The palpebral conjunctiva is continuous with the bulbar conjunctival epithelium, which reflects over the front of the eyeball.
