Definition

Antoine Micheau

The prelaminar arterial branch refers to the arterial ramus that arises from a spinal branche of a posterior intercostal artery or a lumbar artery and courses along the anterior (deep) surface of the lamina of vertebral arch that is, the surface facing the spinal canal before the artery reaches or crosses over the lamina itself. This branch supplies the Lamina of vertebral arch, the base of the spinous process, and adjacent periosteum.

It is distinguished from the postlaminar (or superficial laminar) branches, which course along the posterior (superficial) surface of the lamina to supply the dorsal cortex and overlying musculature.
