Proper cochlear artery

Arteria cochlearis propria

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The proper cochlear artery (Main cochlear artery) is one of the two terminal branches of the common cochlear artery that divides into:

  • The proper cochlear artery (arteria cochlearis propria)

  • The vestibulocochlear artery (cochlear branch of the vestibulocochlear artery)

The proper cochlear artery enters the modiolus of the cochlea through the cochlear canal (via the cribriform plate at the base of the modiolus) and becomes the spiral modiolar artery, which is the principal end artery of the cochlea. From the spiral modiolar artery, radiating arterioles branch perpendicularly from the midmodiolar axis within the spiral lamina toward the lateral cochlear wall, where they feed into the capillary network of the stria vascularis.
