Radiocapitate ligament

Ligamentum radiocapitatum

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The radiocapitate ligament is a palmar (volar) extrinsic radiocarpal ligament that originates from the radial styloid process and courses distally and ulnarly to insert onto the palmar aspect of the capitate, forming part of the ligamentous sling (Palmar radiocarpal ligament complex) that stabilizes the carpus against the radius.

This term is listed in the Terminologia Anatomica 2 (listed in parenthese as an inconstant term) and it is not clear if this a portion or a variation of the radioscaphocapitate (RSC) ligament, reflecting its full course: it arises from the radial styloid, wraps hemicircumferentially around the waist/distal pole of the scaphoid, and then interdigitates with fibers from the palmar triangular fibrocartilage complex just palmar to the head of the capitate, with only a minor distal insertion into the body of the capitate itself
