Retroperitoneal fasciae

The retroperitoneal fasciae are the complex, multi-layered connective tissue planes that enclose the retroperitoneum, the space between the parietal peritoneum and the posterior abdominal wall. These fascial layers divide this anatomical region into distinct compartments,dictating how diseases and fluid collections spread. The retroperitoneum is traditionally partitioned into three main compartments by key fascial structures:

• Renal Fascia (Gerota's and Zuckerkandl's): Encapsulates the kidneys and adrenal glands. It is divided into an anterior lamina (Gerota's fascia) and a posterior lamina (Zuckerkandl's fascia).

• Lateroconal Fascia: A lateral extension of the renal fascia that fuses with the parietal peritoneum and separates the perineal space from the posterior pararenal space.
