Retropubic space

Spatium retropubicum

  • Synonym: Prevesical space
  • Eponym: Cave of Retzius

Definition

Antoine Micheau

When the bladder is distended, the peritoneum is carried up with the expanded viscus so that a considerable part of the anterior surface of the latter lies directly against the abdominal wall without the intervention of peritoneal membrane, forming the retropubic space (prevesical space of Retzius).

The retropubic space is described to be placed behind the pubic symphysis but may extend at the level of umbilicus if the bladder is full.
