The rib 2 (second rib) is a flat, curved bone and articulates posteriorly with the T2 vertebra and anteriorly with the manubriosternal junction, which is the junction between the manubrium and the body of the sternum.

The second rib is longer than the first rib and has a more pronounced curvature. It features a head, neck, and tubercle, similar to other ribs, but its tubercle is less prominent. The shaft of the second rib is thinner and less curved compared to the first rib, and it has a rough area on its upper surface for the attachment of the serratus anterior muscle. The costal groove, which houses the intercostal vessels and nerve, is located along the inferior border of the rib. This rib also provides attachment points for the posterior scalene muscle and the second digitation of the serratus anterior muscle.
