Definition

The rib 1 (first rib) is the most superior of the ribs and has several distinctive anatomical features. The first rib is short and broad, with a single articular facet on its head for articulation with the first thoracic vertebra. It has a prominent tubercle for the attachment of the scalene muscles and a groove for the subclavian artery and vein. The first rib attaches anteriorly to the manubrium of the sternum via its costal cartilage
