Definition

The rib 8 (eighth rib) is a false rib.

The eighth rib typically articulates with the vertebral column at the T8 vertebra and connects anteriorly to the costal cartilage of the seventh rib, contributing to the costal margin.

However, there is significant variability in its anatomy: according to a cadaver study, the eighth rib was found to attach directly to the sternum without joining the seventh rib in 10% of cases. Additionally, the eighth rib had free tips in 45% of evaluations, indicating variability in its anterior attachment.
