Superior glenohumeral ligament
Ligamentum glenohumerale superius
- Synonym: Superior glenohumeral band
Definition
The superior glenohumeral ligament (SCGHL) may lack in 3% of cases and has a variable in origin: supraglenoid tubercle, superior labrum, tendon of the long head of biceps brachial (LHB tendon), middle glenohumeral ligament, or some combination.
The superior glenohumeral ligament (SGHL) extends in a plane nearly perpendicular to the middle glenohumeral ligament and parallel to the coracoid process, close to the biceps tendon and inserts into a small depression above the lesser tuberosity (fovea capitis of the humerus), where it blends with the medial band of the coracohumeral ligament (CHL) within the rotator interval and forms a sling around the tendon of the long head of biceps brachial (LHB tendon).
