Supracristal plane

Planum supracristale

Definition

The supracristal plane (a.k.a. supracrestal plane) is an example of a transverse (or horizontal or axial) reference plane in the human body. The plane connects the highest points of iliac crests–of the right and left pelvic bones–with each other. The supracristal plane lies above the level of intertubercular plane and therefore passes through the umbilical region in the center and lumbar regions on the sides. Posteriorly, the supracristal plane lies at the level of fourth (L4) lumbar vertebrae. This is the same level where the abdominal aorta splits up into right and left common iliac arteries.
