Vertebral foramen
Foramen vertebrale
- Latin synonym: Foramen vertebrae
Definition
A vertebral foramen is the opening in a vertebra that allows for the passage of the spinal cord and associated structures. Each vertebra has a vertebral foramen, which collectively form the vertebral canal through which the spinal cord passes. The vertebral foraminae are bounded anteriorly by the vertebral body, laterally by the pedicles, and posteriorly by the laminae and spinous process.
In addition to the central vertebral foramen, there are also intervertebral foraminae, which are openings between adjacent vertebrae that allow for the exit of spinal nerves.
