Xiphisternal joint

Synchondrosis xiphosternalis

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The xiphisternal joint is the anatomical junction between the xiphoid process and the body of the sternum. This joint is typically a synchondrosis (cartilaginous joint where the bones are joined by hyaline cartilage). Over time, this joint may ossify and become a synostosis, particularly in older adults.
