Zygomatic region
Regio zygomatica
Definition
The zygomatic region refers to the anatomical area of the face overlying the zygomatic bone, also known as the cheekbone or malar bone.
This region is a key component of the midface and is bounded superiorly by the infraorbital rim, laterally by the zygomatic arch, and inferiorly by the maxilla. The zygomatic region serves as a structural bridge connecting the facial skeleton to the neurocranium, provides origin sites for the masseter and several facial muscles, and acts as a buttress for resisting masticatory forces. It is also of aesthetic significance, contributing to facial contour and prominence of the cheek.
