Central nervous system

Systema nervosum centrale

Definition

Felipe Barona Lopez

The central nervous system comprises the brain and the spinal cord, forming the core of the vertebrate nervous system. It is responsible for the integration, coordination, and regulation of sensory input and motor output, as well as higher cognitive functions such as learning, memory, and behavior. Encased within the protective bony structures of the cranium and vertebral column, the central nervous system is further safeguarded by meninges and bathed in cerebrospinal fluid, which cushions and nourishes neural tissues.
