Myology

Myologia

Definition

Marjorie Champarou

Myology is an essential component of veterinary anatomy, directly related to locomotion, posture, and the physiological functions of animals.

It is defined as the branch of anatomy that studies muscles: their structure, organization, function, and distribution within the body.

In veterinary anatomy, myology particularly focuses on striated skeletal muscles, which enable voluntary movements, as well as their bony attachments, innervation, blood supply, and biomechanical role.

Muscles are classified according to various criteria: shape (fusiform, flat, circular...), function (flexors, extensors, abductors...), or position (axial, appendicular).
