Cutaneous muscles

Musculi cutanei

Definition

Marjorie Champarou

Cutaneous muscles are thin striated skeletal muscles located in the superficial fascia, just beneath the skin, where their fibers terminate partially in the dermis and, more rarely, on the skeleton.

Although less prominent than the major locomotor muscles, they constitute the primary driver of skin mobility in domestic mammals.
