Muscles of the tail [coccygeal]

Musculi caudae [coccygis]

Definition

Anne-Sophie Emeric

The muscles of the tail are a continuation of the muscles of the back and pelvis. They are arranged in a circular manner around the coccygeal vertebrae. They serve several functions and can be classified into three groups: the elevators, the depressors, and the lateral flexors. All the muscles of the tail are surrounded by the caudal fascia.
