Muscles of back

Musculi dorsi

Definition

Antoine Micheau, Marjorie Champarou

The muscles of back are a group of muscular structures that are part of the axial musculature and extend from the head to the pelvis along the spine.

They play an essential role in maintaining posture, enabling locomotion, stabilizing the spine, and mobilizing the vertebral column (extension, flexion, lateral bending, and rotation).

These muscles are organized into several overlapping layers.
